sleeping Dashiell on film | modern baby photographer, San Francisco

If you’ve followed my blog for a while you would recognize this little guy. I feel lucky that I have been able to photograph Dashiell since he was a newborn. Today when I picked up my film I got this little, sleeping surprise. He’s much bigger now and awaiting the arrival of a sibling any day! Good luck Kyle + Corey.

Ace bear, Palm Springs, 2010 | modern family photographer, San Francisco + New York

It’s amazing how exciting it can be to pick up film from the lab. Today I picked up some film from our trip to Palm Springs and it felt like Christmas morning. If you’ve only ever known digital photography you should give film a try every now and again just to experience how different the entire process it. Not only do you slow down while shooting but the anticipation of having to wait to see your images makes it all the more special. It reminds me of the feeling I had when I first fell in love with the magic of emulsion. Enjoy one image of the little bear I found at the Ace Hotel. More images to come soon…

Sarah - Hi Shelly,

I did process my own images but the color stuff wasn’t totally old-school with chemicals, etc. I forget the name of the monster machine we had but it was totally great to print late at night and wait for warm images to roll out of the machine. I (sort of) miss those days. :)

Shelly - I imagine that you processed your own images in college (I did). Remember the magic of a color darkroom. I have a box of some of my old work that I secretly go smell sometimes to remember all those long nights printing film… darkroom chemicals, it may be weird but sooooooo good.

Samaria - I love the texture that film creates. Also, I love the ACE!!!

a dusty vineyard, baby lambs, and cupcakes, spring trip 2010 | modern photographer, san francisco

Wherever you may I hope you’re enjoying some lovely Spring weather. I have always adored Spring. Perhaps it’s because I’m a Spring baby or that our days grow longer, or the landscape is so very fresh, dewey, and brilliantly green. Growing up on the East Coast Spring was quite dramatic for us. I have lovely memories of Spring as a kid; the smell of wild onion grass, earthworms bubbling up through wet earth, wobbly lambs and sheep, newly born, rain that feels more cleansing than other times of the year. California is so very different for me. The clues of Spring are much more subtle but I’ve grown to love them, too.

Sarah - That’s so funny. Bi-Rite is so awesome and it sounds like something they would do. Tara bought two of the lambs I believe and I wanted to buy one, too but they are kind of far away and would have to stay on the vineyard. Perhaps I’ll talk Joe in to letting me have a goat or two and some chickens when the house is finished. That would be awesome! Great to see you, Hillary!

April 1, 2010 - 11:51 am

Hillary - Looks awesome. When MK and I were in SF last weekend there were baby goats outside the Bi-Rite grocery place. Michael wanted to go back later and bribe the guy to take one.

mom - A lamb would love Joe and Luna. So wonderful the three of you are still sharing life together in CA – but we miss you all. I am ordering film today. xo

Sarah - You’re so sweet, Rachel. You’re right about T+L not aging much at all. I’m the one that has aged the most (you should see all my gray hair!) and that’s why I stay behind the camera. Hope you are doing great…finally out of that wet and cold winter!

March 25, 2010 - 5:21 pm

Rachel - Looks like you three had a great time! I love that you guys are still friends after all these years. And it pains me to say this but all of you haven’t aged one bit! It must be the California sun. :)

March 25, 2010 - 2:44 pm

Sarah - it was lovely, Edyta. see you next time! tara, ruben was so much fun laughing at all our excitement over the lambs. he’s awesome!

vintage footage in San Francisco | a little Friday inspiration

Here’s a little Friday inspiration for you. I found this via @SFNow on twitter. Jeff Altman in Chicago inherited this 16mm Kodachrome footage from a trip his grandparents who took a trip to San Francisco in 1958. So lovely. San Francisco 1958 from Jeff Altman on Vimeo. Tweet
