Modern Kids Photography Blog bio picture

hello + welcome

Modern Kids Photography focuses on the wonder, complexity, and joy of childhood.

My name is Sarah Wert and I am the primary photographer and owner of Modern Kids Photography, San Francisco. While everyone loves a smiling kid, that's not always what I look for. Children express themselves through many incredible emotions and I'm interested in capturing all their moods and unique personality traits. My goal is to give you not only a fun and enjoyable family photography session but to make unexpected, and indelible imagery you will never forget.

I'm on the road many times during the year. Contact me to inquire about my travel schedule, to book your portrait session, or just to say hello. I would love to hear from you!

$1,000 says Keili can navigate San Francisco better than you can | modern family photographer, Cole Valley, San Francisco

$1,000 says Ms. Keili can navigate the city of San Francisco better than you can. I’m kidding of course but this little lady has some serious “street-smart” skills. She is hands down the most outgoing, affable, polite, and down right sophisticated little kids I’ve ever met. Yes, I’ve said it. I don’t always make such grandiose statements but little Keili is totally amazing.

an afternoon with Jin | modern kids photographer, Oakland

Naturally, I meet quite a lot of kids. One of my favorite things about them is that their personalities differ wildly in kids of the same age. I was reminded of this when I met Jin and his family recently in the East Bay.

Therefore I thought I’d share a fun nursery room via one of my favorite design/kid/family blogs, Ohdeedoh. You can see the full post on this clever and well-designed room over on their blog here.

on being a little sister, kiyomi + mia | modern family photographer, oakland

sister, -noun; a female offspring having both parents in common with another offspring; female sibling.

If this is a the technical definition of ’sister’ then I would argue ‘little sister’ needs a definiton all its own. It might go something like this:

little sister, -noun; female offspring, prone to lifelong torment of older sister including profound levels of mimickry, stealing of prized possessions including clothing and jewelry, never-ending admiration and obsessive tendencies toward older sister, and last but not least dramatic personality traits which are known to cause great duress to older sister.

Sasha & Delaney, fall family session | modern family photographer, san francisco

I hope you’re enjoying Halloween today by stuffing your face with some treats. I wanted to share a few frames from a recent East Bay shoot with Sasha and her little sister, Delaney.

A year ago I had the pleasure of photographing Sasha’s 2nd birthday; a fun, kid-filled event full of costumes and Halloween-inspired cupcakes. I was really excited to see the girls again and even though I see it all the time, I’m amazed how fast kids grow! Enjoy a few photos of these incredibly cute girls!

wall frames, inspiration | modern family photographer, san francisco

Last week I was helping my clients Bess + Camille create a wall of prints for their home to celebrate their pregnancy and their adorable son, Caleb. I was excited that they chose a bunch of mismatched frames in black and silver. We’re still working on the wall gallery but I promise to share once...

lucas family, a morning at the market, sunday morning sessions | modern kids photographer, san francisco

Ok so maybe this is actually a Saturday morning in September but you get the idea. Last month I had the pleasure of spending a really lovely morning with the Lucas Family. You might remember that I photographed their wedding along the Russian River this summer. Dad, Alina, and I started bright an early, 7 am to be exact. We made our way to the Alemany Farmer’s Market in San Francisco. If you love food and live in SF you’ve been here. Alice Waters has been known to shop here. It’s an incredibly diverse market where you can buy fresh seafood, delicious breads and pastries, rare mushrooms, asian vegetables I have no idea how to cook, all kinds of seasonal fruits and vegetables, and even live chickens. Yep, live chickens.
