HELLO and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! So sorry for the lack of posts these days. It was a little crazy this holiday season, but now I’m back and ready to make the nursery debut. The nursery, Everett and Amelia’s Pad, which was photographed by the talented Mrs. Sarah! I thought I’d share a few tidbits about the nursery. Enjoy!!

Total project time: 3 months. We had to move out of our previous apartment 4 months before my due date. The apartment was located on the top floor of a four story building with no elevator. Staying in this apartment with twins meant a year of not seeing the outside world, at least not easily. A move was necessary! :]

Our new apartment, like most apartments in SF, has a formal dining room that is considered a bedroom. We put the kids in the formal dining room because of its large size, and hung Ikea drapery to cover the french doors for late night t.v. watching and guest entertainment. It’s worked out perfectly.

Design Approach | Theme: Gender Neutral modern with animals and trees. [Everett's bedding: Elephants | Amelia's bedding: Birds]

I chose the wall color after the bedding was selected. A neutral gray wall color complemented the pink and blue bedding we selected from Dwell Studio for Target. For accent colors, I chose white and yellow to help tie in the furniture and floors. I love incorporating graphics|texture when designing and I love trees, so I decided a tree was a perfect, yet subtle enough graphic for the room. My twin sister, a design architect, is the one responsible for painting the beautiful tree and owl on the wall. I found the art, and she offered to draw and paint them since I was so enormous! What an awesome and talented sister, huh?

Resources:

Crib | Changing Table: Ouef Sparrow Collection. The cribs also convert into cute toddler beds, which of course is a win, win, but also a reason for a our splurge. 3-5 years of use was a great way to get my husband’s approval since we had to buy two!

Glider: Luca by Monte. This is the perfect size glider for our nursery. With two cribs in one room, a small scale, yet comfortable rocker was necessary. Not to mention, I love the look of it!

Artwork [several places]: Etsy, The Curriosity Shoppe, and Past Perfect. Dressers and ceiling light fixture are from Ikea. Floor lamp is from West Elm. The rug is from Flor, which helped tie in the boy|girl bedding, and also brought in a touch of our Texas roots. I heart cowhide. The Eames molded plastic arm chair is borrowed from our dining table. The yellow pillow is a Thomas O’brien for Target.

Mobiles: (Bird Mobile) Etsy and (Whale Mobile) Design Public. My husband picked the whale mobile. It was the only thing he asked to pick…so I let him. The Elephants didn’t come in the colors I wanted at the time, but now I believe they do!

Animal Heads (which I just love) are from Paxton Gate for Kids.

Total Cost: $3000 wich includes: cribs, changing table, glider, ottoman, and rug. All other elements were either given as gifts or were items that were already purchased! Keep in mind we have two, and a large room!

I’ll be posting a bit more this year, so check back for more inspiration! Best wishes to everyone for a successful year in 2011!!

However, just outside of San Francisco you can find anything from dirt roads, treacherous cliffs, black sand beaches, quaint farms, dusty old towns, kitschy motels, and much more. Yesterday, I went on a quick scouting mission to Sonoma and found a few non-descript locations for my shoot on Sunday.

Whether I’m doing a commercial project or something with a local family, location is really important. It can really make all the difference between a good shoot and a spectacular shoot. Here are a few images from my scouting mission. I’ll be sure to share images from this shoot next week.

What’s your favorite place to shoot in San Francisco? Right now, I’m enjoying my very own neighborhood Potrero Hill and Dogpatch. On sleepy weekend mornings it’s nearly devoid of people (and other photogs), and we have tons of old builidngs with great patina, a somewhat industrial look, as well as some really stunning downtown views.

First, a very big thank you to everyone who came out to Crissy Field on Saturday for our picnic! We had such a perfect day for a party. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than giving back a little to all of my wonderful clients from the past year. Thank you all very much for allowing me to do a job that I absolutely love!

Secondly, I wanted to thank my husband Joe for being the Modern Kids Thank You Picnic MVP. He not only helped out all day including setting up and tearing down but also created some really awesome stuff for our party. He made me custom sandwich boards (which I painted with chalkboard paint) to help steer people our way as well as my absolute favorite gift of the day, custom camera necklaces for the kids. I hope everyone who stopped by was able to take one home. Rod Hunting an awesome designer in Chicago made the drawings. We had two kinds an old twin lens reflex Mamiya and a Holga. They were laser-cut out of a really nice brown/gray mat board and he even included my website on the front, how clever. The only problem with them was that many of the babies were disappointed to find out that they were not edible. Perhaps next year we’ll try chocolate. Seriously, though thanks to my awesome husband!

Also, a big thanks goes to everyone who helped make it such a fun day including Bess, Camille, and Caleb for showing up early and helping us set up. To Eugenia, Lisa, and Sara for their mad party-planning skills (and Sara’s mustache making abilities). To Darach for the use of his van. Milton for the table and Eugenia’s family for the table and canopy. Finally to Nate for making our party even better with his sweet tunes. And last but not least everyone who provided prizes for our picnic including Heath Ceramics, Dante Beatrix, FilmMonsters, Petit Appetit, and more…thank you all!

If you didn’t make our party this year…there’s always next year. Enjoy the photos below and for the full gallery, check them out on flickr.

A few years ago when I was in the throws of wedding planning (so glad I don’t have to do that again), my husband and I were thinking of a fun type of save the date. We had already started the process of working with a super-awesome designer for our wedding invites and wanted to save a little money. By the way, if you’re interested in seeing our invites click here. It’s one of my absolute favorite details from our wedding. How could you go wrong with hand screen-printed posters by the awesome, PJ Chmiel? They definitely set the tone for our wedding.

Long story short, one of us (the jury is still out on who’s idea it was) thought of wooded postcards. It was a farm wedding, after all. And so, the process of finding a company that did them began. We stumbled upon a small company in Michigan called Cards of Wood, who did an awesome job.

Fast forward a couple of years and many of you reading this have seen wooden postcards or gift tags in stationary boutiques and gift shops. They seem to be everywhere. I feel like I can safely say we were on the front-end of that trend (the only time in history). I still really like the idea despite seeing them all over the place. So when I needed to update my business cards I opted for the wooden variety. I did get some letterpress quotes as well but figured I’d do something a little more unique (despite absolutely loving letterpress).

I designed them easily on my own and it was fun to see the final product. The only downfall is you still have to be careful of the splinters, seriously. Oh and they probably also make great kindling in a pinch.

Love them? Hate them? Find them totally impractical for a photographer? Would love to hear your thoughts.
