hello + welcome

Modern Kids Photography focuses on the wonder, complexity, and joy of childhood.

My name is Sarah Wert and I am the primary photographer and owner of Modern Kids Photography, San Francisco. While everyone loves a smiling kid, that's not always what I look for. Children express themselves through many incredible emotions and I'm interested in capturing all their moods and unique personality traits. My goal is to give you not only a fun and enjoyable family photography session but to make unexpected, and indelible imagery you will never forget.

I'm on the road many times during the year. Contact me to inquire about my travel schedule, to book your portrait session, or just to say hello. I would love to hear from you!

a day of little men, back to work | modern baby photographer, San Francisco

As some of you may know I was out of town unexpectedly for six weeks with my husband and his family in Illinois. We recently got back to San Francisco and I’m officially back to work full-time. I won’t elaborate on our time there, just to say that we lost a truly incredible woman to cancer and I wouldn’t have traded those six weeks for anything. I admire my husband and his sister more than I could imagine. We’ve been reminded of all the blessings in our lives and one of those things is my job and the incredible people I get to meet.

slowing down, at home with family | modern family photographer, san francisco

If you’ve emailed me recently or follow me on twitter you’ll know that Joe and I had to extend our stay with his family in Southern Illinois. My mother in law, Marilyn is very sick with brain and spinal cancer that developed after a year long battle with Inflammatory breast cancer. It’s been a sad holiday for us but we’re ultimately thankful to have this time with her. We’re finding that slowing down and just being with family has been a wonderful gift. We’ve been playing in the snow, warming up by the fire, watching tons and tons of movies, cooking, and just being together.

Woolrich John Rich & Bros. Ad Campaign | influences

I’m really loving this simple and straightforward ad campaign by WP Lavori in Corso for Woolrich. The photographers are Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, fine art photographers based in London. I read a short article about the shoot in the Dec 09 issue of pdn but you can see more imagery from the shoot here and I’ve included the behind the scenes video below.

good mornin’ | modern kids photographer, san francisco

It’s been SUPER CRAZY over here at Modern Kids. Apologies to anyone who is waiting on an email from me. We had four shoots this weekend between two of us (Eugenia shot this weekend, yay!). I’m trying to squeeze in a few more spots for the holidays – I only have weekday availability left but Jenna will have some weekend spots in San Francisco if you book asap. Email me directly at hello(at)modernkidsphoto.com for more info.

vintage travel mural, nursery room inspiration via ohdeedoh | modern family photographer, san francisco

Happy Monday, everyone! I have newborns on my mind because I’m waiting on three of them to arrive this month…so very exciting. Therefore I thought I’d share a fun nursery room via one of my favorite design/kid/family blogs, Ohdeedoh. You can see the full post on this clever and well-designed room over on their blog here.

Enjoy + stay tuned for some recent shoots!

on being a little sister, kiyomi + mia | modern family photographer, oakland

sister, -noun; a female offspring having both parents in common with another offspring; female sibling.

If this is a the technical definition of ’sister’ then I would argue ‘little sister’ needs a definiton all its own. It might go something like this:

little sister, -noun; female offspring, prone to lifelong torment of older sister including profound levels of mimickry, stealing of prized possessions including clothing and jewelry, never-ending admiration and obsessive tendencies toward older sister, and last but not least dramatic personality traits which are known to cause great duress to older sister.

diy bird+owl masks | what’s your costume this year?

If you’re procrastinating this Halloween, join the club. I always try to think of something really clever but let’s face it, it’s hard to be clever. Last year in an attempt to be decidedly non-sexy (in a silent protest of the typical female costume), I was a poor excuse for Juno (the Ellen Paige variety, not the city). This year I’m wishing that I wasn’t such a procrastinator. These diy bird + owl masks from Martha Stewart look relatively easy to make and are a little creepy, in a good way.

hands down the most delicious fries in the world, fall family travel | modern kids photographer, san francisco

My apologies for a few delayed emails this week. Joe and I flew to the East Coast for an extra-long weekend vacation with my family. It was such a fun time full of sand, perfect weather, delicious food, and lazy afternoons. Here are a few images. I’ll be sure to share more soon!

what happens at girls camping weekend? | modern kids photographer, san francisco

If you follow me on twitter you’ll know that I just had a mini camping vacation with some of my best girlfriends. We converged on Big Sur from Puerto Rico, Santa Barbara, Oakland, and San Francisco. Parts of our vacation are top secret but I was able to disclose a few things we did…
