Modern Kids Photography Blog bio picture

hello + welcome

Modern Kids Photography focuses on the wonder, complexity, and joy of childhood.

My name is Sarah Wert and I am the primary photographer and owner of Modern Kids Photography, San Francisco. While everyone loves a smiling kid, that's not always what I look for. Children express themselves through many incredible emotions and I'm interested in capturing all their moods and unique personality traits. My goal is to give you not only a fun and enjoyable family photography session but to make unexpected, and indelible imagery you will never forget.

I'm on the road many times during the year. Contact me to inquire about my travel schedule, to book your portrait session, or just to say hello. I would love to hear from you!

$1,000 says Keili can navigate San Francisco better than you can | modern family photographer, Cole Valley, San Francisco

$1,000 says Ms. Keili can navigate the city of San Francisco better than you can. I’m kidding of course but this little lady has some serious “street-smart” skills. She is hands down the most outgoing, affable, polite, and down right sophisticated little kids I’ve ever met. Yes, I’ve said it. I don’t always make such grandiose statements but little Keili is totally amazing.

little miss Arabel, traveling sessions, Chicago | modern kids photographer

I have the wonderful opportunity of traveling to Chicago to shoot a few times per year. If it’s a wintertime shoot I am usually a little obsessed with the weather the week before I arrive as anyone who has lived there will tell you winter weather can be unpredictable. On my last trip in late November we lucked out with an unseasonably warm weekend. I have a bunch of shoots to share from that trip that I will intersperse with Bay area shoots over the next few weeks. I’ll be posting more frequently so please stay tuned.

an afternoon with Jin | modern kids photographer, Oakland

Naturally, I meet quite a lot of kids. One of my favorite things about them is that their personalities differ wildly in kids of the same age. I was reminded of this when I met Jin and his family recently in the East Bay.

why i love photographing kids, sneak-peek petaluma family shoot | modern family photographer san francisco bay area

I have so many shoots to share I don’t even know where to begin. I always feel super-guilty this time of year for not sharing more on the blog. I think I’ll start with the most recent shoot and work my way backwards (I have enough shoots for blog posts through the Spring!). Forgive me if your shoot has been posted yet…I’m getting there.

Faith in Sonoma, sneak peek | commercial kids photographer, san francisco

I couldn’t help but share a few quick selects from Faith’s shoot in Sonoma. Faith is a kids model for City Models, here in San Francisco and most recently was the cover image for the Crewcuts catalog this summer. She is such an awesome kid, mature beyond her years, and so fun and easy to work with.

location scouting, sonoma | commercial kids photographer, san francisco

Sometimes I have to pinch myself living in a place like San Francisco. We have such amazing access to a diverse array of locations within a few hours of the city. I have shot all over San Francisco from our beaches to chinatown to the greenery in Golden Gate Park. However, just outside of San Francisco you can find anything from dirt roads, treacherous cliffs, black sand beaches, quaint farms, dusty old towns, kitschy motels, and much more. Yesterday, I went on a quick scouting mission to Sonoma and found a few non-descript locations for my shoot on Sunday.

don’t let his serious face fool you, this kid is all smiles | commercial kid photographer, san francisco

I had so much fun yesterday photographing a handsome young man named Ryan Nelson for a local modeling agency. We shot in three separate locations around the city but my favorite was outside of St. Francis Fountain in the Mission. Thanks again to the owners and staff of SFF for accommodating us and for making the excellent sundae! Thanks as well to Eugenia for assisting and to Megan and Annemarie for the incredible styling and wardrobe. Last but not least to Ryan and his mom for being so fun to work with! We hope you enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did!
