Behind the scenes with MilK Magazine, Paris // kids fashion magazine

Happy Friday to you. I’m really excited about this post. I hope you like it. I remember the first time I saw MilK Magazine. It was about four years ago and I was in my local coffee shop – that incidentally has an incredible collection of international magazines. Something caught my eye on the very...

erika verginelli - Hi Sarah! Thanks ;-) Ah, the video is the “making of” of an editorial that I shot recently! I didn’t produce it, it was a video producer, partner of mine. The complete editorial will be soon on the blog. I’m enjoying shooting editorials, it’s fun right! ;-) This one is my fav so far: http://www.erikaverginelliblog.com/2011/06/editorial-de-moda-revista-pais-filhos.html and the video is out of this world! I love it: http://www.erikaverginelliblog.com/2011/05/um-segredo-guardado-a-7-chaves.html

Sarah - Thanks for the reply, Erika! I just checked the links and they work but perhaps they don’t work because you are in a different language. I used the google translate links. Hmm…Let me find the links for you, sorry! Again, thanks for the comment and lovely work. Your ‘rock around the clock’ video is cute!

Sarah - It is a small staff by our standards. I think we’d have more magazines in business if they paired down a bit. ;)

July 1, 2011 - 1:12 pm

Miz Booshay - What a fantastic article. Such a professional magazine with only 12 people on staff. That is astonding. That would never fly in the states. Right?
Beautiful pictures and wonderful questions!!!
Thanks!

Phillip Toledano for the Anthropologist // inspiration

Have you stumbled upon the Anthropologist yet? It’s discreetly anchored above the pretty frocks, Ikat-upholstered furniture, and bib necklaces that is Anthropologie.com. In their words, the Anthropologist “…is an online space for inspiring works and inspiring individuals. Our premise is simple: we illuminate those who move us in order to move you. We champion the...

Stella McCartney Kids Spring/Summer Collection 2011 // kids fashion

I love everything Stella McCartney does for kids. Have you seen her Spring/Summer Collection for kids yet? She believes in making clothes that are fun and non-restrictive for little ones (kids everywhere can appreciate that). She uses the best color palettes; so bright and fresh.  I wish I could squeeze into a few of these...

The have a unique selection of paintings, drawings, clothing, goods, and books. If you don’t read Japanese make sure you view through Google translate. p.s. If you’re in San Francisco or planning...

Sarah - Thanks, Hillary. It’s always good to know what worked for people. I’m also printing a bunch of articles from the NYTimes…feels like something my dad would do. ;)

April 13, 2011 - 11:47 am

Hillary - These are my favorites (although I do like wallpaper): http://eatshopguides.com/buy/

The Paris one is from June of last year.

I also like this series: http://www.thamesandhudsonusa.com/series/stylecity.htm

But I think THAT Paris one is from ’08 – way old.

Vintage Circus-themed Baby Shower on a Budget // ideas

Happy Monday to you! This past weekend my friend Lauren and I hosted a vintage circus-themed baby shower for our dear friends Tara and Matt in Santa Barbara. Lauren and I are not huge fans of the traditional games and gift-opening that happens at baby showers (sorry!). And we knew that Tara and Matt simply...

Mom - so pretty. wish I could have been there. photos are great – like a mag spread (: xoxoxo

April 12, 2011 - 11:05 am

Sarah - Thanks for the comment, Jody. I’m not sure how fabulous my life is but it’s definitely fun. ;) Thank you! I’m with you on the games. I think they feel really forced and most ppl I know do not like them. I think food and drinks are enough to bring people together. Sometimes it’s more painful if you don’t know anyone and have to interact by playing games. It’s like a team-building exercise at work! ;)

April 12, 2011 - 10:44 am

JodyM - You seem to lead such a fabulous and fun life. Personally, I’m not a fan of games or present opening. I find it all embarrassing, boring and “forced”. I’d rather just hang out with friends, eat, and drink (well… when not pregnant). :) I guess it’s the same with some of the wedding rituals too. Which is why we had a very small wedding in Italy.

April 11, 2011 - 2:53 pm

Sarah - Haha! That’s a great site, Hillary! Some of these trends get exhausting. Too bad a lot of them are good ideas. The world is moving so fast though, hard to get genuinely fresh ideas.

April 11, 2011 - 2:50 pm

Hillary - I think it all depends on the crowd – both in terms of games and present-opening. At some showers, everyone knows each other, but at others the guests are from different groups of friends so giving people something to do is a good idea.

Photobooths, fake moustaches, bunting…reminds me of this: http://www.eastsidebride.com/2011/03/pop-quiz-how-many-wedding-trends-can.html

April 11, 2011 - 2:20 pm

Sarah - Wow. Thanks for the long comment, Hillary! We were going to do a photo booth but honestly I’m a little over the photo booths (at least for a little while). I know they are fun but I’ve seriously done a million of them since 2006 and just didn’t have the stamina. Using an instant camera would have been fun though so it becomes an immediate gift to the parents-to-be. :) There were a few guests who wanted to see Tara open gifts (and her mom) but I suspected a majority of guests were happy to just mingle and not have to do that (we had lots of men there). We opened gifts in a smaller group after everyone left and I think Tara preferred it that way. Also, the games you describe sound fun! Our mom-to-be was also not into games so we skipped them entirely and I don’t think anyone was disappointed. Maybe next time! Thanks again, Hillary!

April 11, 2011 - 2:12 pm

Hillary - I have thrown several baby showers in the past year. We opened presents at 2 of those. One wanted to and one’s mom strong-armed them into it.

Themes, plus games/activities below…

- – - – -

SHOWER 1: kind of like retro-kid – a little circus-y

we played mini games but they were almost more of a joke: we had a baby toss game (like Bozo’s Bucket Bonanza – buckets with a 1-2-3 on them and a handful of plastic babies); we had pin-the-baby-on-the-Daniels (our friend did an illustration of the couple and you were blindfolded and had to stick a baby on the poster); and a guess-how-many ___ in the jar (there were animal crackers, army men and something else…gummi bears?).

we also did this activity: http://www.rachelleonard.com/my_right_brain/2009/09/baby-shower-craft-projects.html
i was supposed to make these into a book and totally slacked off…

SHOWER 2: had a woodland theme

we didn’t have games – the only real activities were drawing a leaf (which i’m still supposed to make into a poster) and writing in a little guestbook. we also had plant favors and gave everyone a woodland name (like Hedgehog Hillary).

SHOWER 3: was a english tea party (this was for sara and george)

we had a quiz where everyone guessed who-said-what between the two of them (bad game though b/c every answer george gave me was SO obviously him and not sara). i think that might be all we did…? they opened presents.

I have TONS of good photos of the woodland one (on my flickr) and a few crappy photos of the others (which I’d have to dig up) if you are interested in seeing them. Oh, and we had photobooths at all 3.
